After creating your account, KnowledgeSet asks a few questions about you and what you study. This helps you get back to your subjects and the right courses without choosing them every time.
This guide explains the fields on the setup page. You can update your details and learning setup later in Settings.
Your first name and surname
What should we call you? is your first name. Surname is your family name.
Both fields are required. You can change them later under Account settings.
What are you studying?
Choose the qualification or study level you are working towards, such as GCSE, IGCSE or A-level. This determines which subjects and courses appear next.
This is different from your school year. For example, a Year 12 student may be studying A-levels. Choose the qualification you are taking, rather than trying to match the number in your year group.
If you are not sure which qualification you are studying, ask your teacher or check your course information.
What year are you in?
Choose your current school year if you want to share it. This field is optional: you can leave Prefer not to say selected and still finish setup.
Your school year does not choose your qualification, exam board or course for you. Those are separate choices.
Which subjects are you studying?
Select the subjects you want to set up. You can choose more than one, and you need at least one subject to finish onboarding.
Selecting a subject reveals any course choices you need to make for it. Each subject has its own setup, so your Biology and Chemistry courses can use different exam boards.
Choose the subject that matches your course. For example, if separate and Combined Science subjects are listed, check which one your school teaches before selecting it.
What does Exam board mean?
The Exam board is the organisation responsible for your qualification's specification and exams, such as AQA, Edexcel, OCR or Cambridge International. It is not the name of your school.
Choose the board your school uses for that particular subject. Taking AQA Biology does not necessarily mean you also take AQA Chemistry.
If there is only one supported board for a subject, it may already be selected. If you are unsure, your teacher or school course information can confirm it. Avoid choosing a different board just to complete the form: its course content may differ.
What do Course and Tier mean?
A subject and exam board can offer more than one course. KnowledgeSet needs to know the specific one you study.
- Tier appears for a Foundation/Higher choice. Choose the tier your school has entered you for or is preparing you to take.
- Course covers other versions of a qualification, such as different Biology courses or Core/Extended options where those are available.
Course labels may include a specification code, dates or other details to help you distinguish them. Match these to your school's course information; you do not need to type a code yourself.
If there is only one supported course for your chosen board, it may be selected automatically, so you will not always see a separate Course or Tier field.
What are optional topics?
Some courses let your school or class choose which parts of the syllabus to study. When this applies, extra choices appear beneath that subject. Many courses have no optional topics, so these controls will not appear at all.
Read the instructions above the choices. They explain what the options belong to and what you may select. Different courses can have different rules, so do not assume every group means “choose one.”
Choose the topics your class is studying. These are choices within your course, rather than extra subjects you must add.
Not sure yet? That's okay
Select I don’t know yet if you do not know which optional content your school has chosen. You can finish setup with that answer and update it later.
Selecting it clears the topic choices in that group. If your course has several groups, you can answer the ones you know and leave the others unresolved.
This reassurance applies to optional-content choices. You still need a study level and a complete course selection for each subject you add.
Finishing setup
Select Finish setup when your details are ready.
If a field needs attention, the form shows a message so you can correct it. For example, a course that requires one optional topic will reject two selected topics. Follow the instructions or choose I don’t know yet if you are unsure.
If your course is not listed, check the supported choices and ask your teacher to confirm the course details. Do not select an unrelated course as a substitute.
Changing your choices later
Open the account menu in the navbar to reach:
- Account settings to edit your name or school year.
- Learning setup to manage subjects, exam boards, courses and optional topics.
You can also change your study level in Learning setup. This asks for confirmation and clears your current subject and course selections so you can choose them again for the new level. Your existing learning progress and practice history are kept.
